Great Companies are Built by Great People

Established in 1963 Wholesale Domestic was founded by Walter Toward Senior. Fast forward 56 years, and the company has evolved into Wholesale Domestic Bathrooms which is now the leading bathroom supplier in Scotland.  Joint CEO’s Derek & Walter Toward, sons of Walter Senior, remain owners to this day and lead the business with Brian Toward, Derek’s son. Collectively; they will take Wholesale Domestic Bathrooms into the future. Fundamentally, the Towards believe that the evolution of this great family business is a direct result of the fantastic people who have worked alongside them over the years.

This high regard for the extended ‘Wholesale Domestic Family’ was felt on January 11th 2019 when Tommy Sneddon, an employee with over 43 years of service to the company, hung up his high vis jacket for the final time.  The company celebrated his departure from the business with a retirement lunch, where all 65 staff gathered to say their good byes and wish Tommy well. Stories were shared, tears were shed and whiskey was drank; it was the perfect send of for a Wholesale Domestic legend.

Tommy started his journey working in Argyle Street store as a delivery driver. During his 43 years Tommy worked in many roles for the business and finished his time working at the company’s new 133,000ft warehouse and dispatch centre.  Tommy heard about the job through his brother in law who told Tommy it would a job for life.  Little did Tommy know that this is exactly what it what it would turn out to be.

During his leaving speech Tommy shared some fantastic memories of his time at Wholesale Domestic Bathrooms, he said

“Over the years I have been well looked after by the Toward family.  It’s not every day that you get to work with three generations from the same family.  I was signed onto the company by Walter Senior, a great man and 43 years later I was signed off by his Son Walter Junior, a friend.”

“My fondest memories include our brilliant nights out, I loved nothing more than when we were all together.  The Towards became my extended family, the brothers I never had.  I am very grateful for what they offered me in terms of employment and support.”

Tommy’s time with the company was filled with both work and play. He recalled

“We also enjoyed a practical joke or two and would often ambush Walter Junior with elastic bands and paper bullets until he could take no more. We also made a secret rope swing in the rafters while cleaning the roof A frames of the warehouse and would enjoy swinging about when we were supposed to be doing other things. We still laugh about our antics to this day.”

Wholesale Domestic has gone through many changes over the years, and Tommy has been there through it all. He continues to be amazed at how much the company has developed. When recalling the extensive company growth, Tommy summed it up in true Glasgow style

“It was like going from an end terrace to a mansion that we filled with great folk along the way.  Quite unbelievable really”

Tommy was known by everyone for his dedication to getting the job done. He was nonstop and always on the go enjoying every minute. His diligence and commitment to the company can’t be understated. His absence record, or lack thereof, is one to be revered; 10 days in 43 years! So committed to his job, he once worked for 10 months straight without a day off; in his words “the big boss (Walter Senior) went mad when he found out and made sure he took the next few weekends off”.

Working for Wholesale Domestic meant a great deal to Tommy. He couldn’t have been more appreciative about how well he had been looked after during his time here. He summed up his time in three words

“enjoyable, pleasurable and privileged”.

It’s almost impossible to put into words the contribution that Tommy had made to Wholesale Domestic over the last 43 years. He’s truly part of the brickwork that has made this company what it is today.  The Toward Family and everyone at Wholesale Domestic wishes Tommy all the best in his well-earned retirement; it is agreed by all that it definitely won’t be the same without you.

Big Scottish Breakfast, with Wholesale DomesticWholesale Domestic are delighted to announce that we are the official sponsors of STV Children’s Appeal’s Big Scottish Breakfast!

The STV Children’s Appeal is committed to helping Scotland’s children and young people who have been affected by poverty. We were shocked by the statistic that 1 in 4 children in Scotland are currently living in poverty. Simple, everyday things, like having breakfast in the morning, is something that many of us take for granted. And yet, for many young people, this is a luxury that they often have to miss out on.  STV Children’s Appeal have set up the Big Scottish Breakfast to help children in Scotland get the best start to the day and the best start in life.

We have a long history of supporting the STV Children’s Appeal; it’s a cause that’s very close to all of our hearts here at Wholesale Domestic, and we’re so excited to be on board as this year’s official sponsor!Big Scottish Breakfast with STV Children's AppealSTV Children’s Appeal are working for a very important cause and they’re doing some truly amazing work. Since launching in 2011, they’ve raised over £16 million, and have awarded grants to youth projects all over Scotland. The money raised helps to provide young people in poverty with food and clothing, and emotional and social support. It also helps to create opportunities for young people to receive employability training.

We’re all super excited to host our own Big Scottish Breakfast, and we encourage everyone else to get involved too! Arrange your own Big Scottish Breakfast at your school or business on Friday 5th October and help raise money for Scotland’s children! New Sport Sponsorship

Wholesale Domestic are delighted to announce our second sport sponsorship of 2018. The news comes after the first race which took place at Knockhill Racing Circuit last weekend.

New sport sponsorship 2018

Director, Walter Toward decided to sponsor motorbike rider, Chris Scott, from Glasgow in a bid to expand Wholesale Domestic’s reach into the world of sport.

Wholesale Domestic sponsors new rider, Chris Scott

Impressed by Chris’ first race, Wholesale Domestic are looking forward to seeing what the rest of the season brings for the rising star.

Chris, workshop controller at Porche Glasgow is delighted to be part of the new sponsorship and is excited to be finally pursuing his dream of racing.

When I spoke to him, he said….

“I've always loved all things on two wheels but my parents would never allow it when I was younger so had to wait until I could afford to do it on my own. After getting my bike license at 26, I decided I'd like a go on track so went and booked my first track day around a year into biking.

After the first one I was totally hooked, and the weekend after my first track day on my road bike, I went and bought a dedicated track bike.

Over the next couple of years I squeezed in as many track days as I could afford at the time. Having completed three years of random track days, I thought enough was enough, if I’m going to do track days, I may as well give it some purpose and try my hand at racing...

Just at the end of last year I traded up and sold my CBR to get my current race bike (Yamaha R6). On the second track day, I had a bit of a moment at Knockhill. I came off at 70-80mph and smashed the bike up a bit (he laughs).

Bike season had ended not long after that, and over winter I spent whatever spare time I had stripping down and rebuilding the bike to get it ready for the start of this race season.

During the rebuild time I joined Knockhill's club and filled in all the relevant forms to be able to race. I prepped the bike to have it race ready spec and started building up enough kit to be able to race.

I had my first race last weekend, and I’m really excited to see how everything goes for me this season, and of course with my new Wholesale Domestic sponsorship.

I’m only one race under my belt, and one week away from race 2 at East Fortune and loving every minute of it! I’ll be competing in the Scottish Championship bike racing in the Formula 600 class. It’s a really exciting time for me, and I’m grateful to Wholesale Domestic for coming on this journey with me.”

I hope you’ll join me in wishing Chris all the best in his new endeavour, we’ll certainly be cheering him on from the side-lines!

Pinspiration

Renovating a bathroom can be a costly business. By the time you’ve chosen everything and had it installed, your bank balance might never be the same again. That’s why you NEED to make sure that your choices are the right ones. The last thing you really need is to finally finish, only to think, ‘I’m not sure about x’. Take it from someone who knows, it’s pretty devastating *weeps.

But in all seriousness, how can you really stop that from happening? I’ll tell you how, now! You need to be able to see your chosen products in real settings. Trust me, once you see it in a physical environment, you’ll know instantly if it’s for your wish list, or your bin list. See what I mean?

Before and after with Pinterest

Blindly choosing products without this visual reference is a brave move, and for some people it can pay off, but the question is, do you really want to take that risk? I didn’t think so.

Pinterest is a haven for many these days. It’s a place to go to find inspiration for your new project and can really help you to decide what you like and what you don’t. It’s invaluable to be able to visualise products in a similar setting to your own design plans and can help banish that ‘uh-oh’ moment completely.

Some of you might be thinking, what is Pinterest? Well, in a nutshell, it’s a social media platform that is image driven to allow users to share and save ideas, from organisational tips to bathroom design. Anyone can use Pinterest and it’s free, all you need is a computer or a smart phone to be able to access it. You can sign up via your Facebook account (if you have one) or using an email address if you don’t. Ideally, you should seriously consider signing up for an account if you haven’t already. Why? It will help you research your ideas properly, and will make the whole decision process easier, no matter what the room or project might be.

Metropole centre tap bath with jets

You might not know, but Wholesale Domestic have a Pinterest account for this very reason. We feel that it’s vital to be able to show customers our products in real settings to help them feel confident about their choices. Our account is a world of inspiration, and will show you what that bath, shower, tap or even tile really looks like in an actual bathroom. Alternatively, you could start your own inspiration board of ideas you like to help you build your own concept before you visit us. It’s easy and has helped so many of customers find the right bathroom for their needs and design preferences.

Don’t gamble with a purchase this big (you know it’s unlikely to end well), check out our account today for instant help and ideas!

For those of you interested where my wisdom on this topic came from….

When I first moved in to my house I ordered a new bathroom without really researching it properly. Once I paid for it to be installed, I realised that I really hated the tiles and the bath, but it was too late. A mere 2 years later, I paid to have it redone because I hated it so much.

It’s not all doom and gloom, this story does have a happy ending. Even though my bank balance was outraged at my second bathroom purchase, I still love my new bathroom. It was a hard lesson to learn, but it’s one that I won’t repeat, that’s for sure!

My advice to you: research it properly and make sure you’re 100% happy before you book an installer.
