Ceramic tiles are a great, cheaper alternative to porcelain. Ideal for walls because there’s no direct contact. The glazed surface is easy to keep clean and is inhospitable to dust mites, germs and bacteria. Ceramic tiles are durable and will last for years to come, they’ll never fade, shrink or expand making them the perfect addition to any bathroom.
Ceramic tiles are made from a natural clay which is pressed or manipulated into the desired shape and size and then coated with a durable glaze (the design) on the surface. The clay is then fired at a high temperature in a kiln to remove most of the water content. The tile is fired very slowly to prevent the shape from distorting. Porcelain tiles are made from a combination of various clays and a finely ground sand which makes the finished tile stronger and more durable. The materials are then pressed or manipulated and fired in the kiln at a higher temperature but over a longer period of time to remove practically all the water content. This process is what makes porcelain tiles denser, less porous, and harder wearing than ceramic tiles.
