What are wet room backer boards?
Backer boards are an essential foundation for any wet room installation. They provide a flat, stable, and completely waterproof surface for you to apply tiles or panels over. Unlike standard plasterboard, they won't rot or warp if they get wet, which is crucial for long-term protection against dampness and mould.
If you're tackling this yourself, our guide on how to tile a bathroom offers some handy tips.
What are wet room wall panels made of?
Most of our panels are made from XPS (extruded polystyrene) or structural foam. These materials are excellent for bathrooms because they're lightweight and easy to cut to size, which helps you get the perfect fit for even the most awkward layouts. They’re also strong enough to support heavy tiles, giving you the freedom to create the bathroom of your dreams.
These wet room plastic wall panels also provide thermal insulation, which helps to keep your room warm and reduces the risk of condensation.
What do wet room panels do?
These panels act as a barrier that stops water from your bath, sink, or shower from coming into contact with the wood or plasterboard inside your walls, ceiling, or floor. By creating a watertight seal, they make sure every drop of water stays where it should be and drains away properly. This gives you total peace of mind that your bathroom is safe from leaks and expensive water damage over time.
Can these panels be installed over existing tiles?
You can actually install panels over your old tiles if they’re still level and firmly stuck to the wall. This can be a helpful shortcut if you’re renovating in a tight timeframe, but for the most professional and watertight finish, we’d generally recommend stripping everything back and starting fresh.
This helps your adhesive bond properly and gives you peace of mind that there isn’t any hidden damp lurking behind the old surface.
